Lots of Anticipation

A lot of my past week has been spent preparing for the next few weeks. I have begun planning another ReTextile event with FHS UNICEF. This is ReTextile’s first big quilt-making event, and I am beyond excited that I am getting to introduce younger people to the quilt-making process since quilting is typically practiced by older generations. These aging demographics are a point of concern for the quilting experts that I have met with for research interviews, so I’m glad that I can use ReTextile to help introduce it to younger generations.
Speaking of research interviews, I met with Mary Kerr, the Vice President of Quilts of Valor and quilting educator, to discuss ReTextile. She had so much great, concrete advice for me. As Tia Nayar did, she recommended I emphasize the fact that ReTextile is women-founded and run. Additionally, she suggested that I emphasize that I am young in an industry dominated by older generations as a way to generate press.
The other major thing I did this week was in preparation for my Original Work. I created ReTextile’s Quilting Guide where I laid out the quilt guidelines for ReTextile quilts. I also resized a couple of quilt patterns for beginner sewists, to make it easier for them to begin quilting.
This week I am going to continue working on my Plano Quilt Guild speech as well as my ISM research speech where I will update the class on my progress. I’m looking forward to sharing my progress with my classmates, as well as hearing their progress.
See you next week,
Ashley
